Madonna Tells ‘The Tonight Show’ About The Wardrobe Malfunction That Almost Ended Her Career: “It Was Just Half of a Butt Cheek”

On Wednesday’s (Aug. 10) taping of The Tonight ShowMadonna proved her level of iconic has no limit. The material girl herself — and her grillz — appeared on the show to promote her new album, “Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones,” which features remixes of her chart-topping hits. During the interview, she reflected on her notorious television performance at the first-ever MTV Video Music Awards, claiming that it almost ended her career.

When talking with host Jimmy Fallon, Madonna said she was surprised “Like a Virgin” became a single over “Material Girl,” adding, “Those were the days I had no say in anything. Can you imagine those days even existing?”

However, despite finding the song “quite controversial,” the singer said, “It turned out that the controversial thing wasn’t the song itself, it was my performance on the MTV Awards.” The performance in question was at the 1984 VMA’s and sometime during her song, she accidentally flashed her hind-side to the audience.

“I walked down these very steep stairs of a wedding cake and I got to the bottom and I started dancing around and my white stiletto pumps fell off,” Madonna explained. “And I was trying to do, like, this smooth move, like, dive for the shoe and make it look like it was choreography. And my dress flipped up and my butt was showing.”

The singer made sure to clarify that it was “just half of a butt cheek” and that she had no idea it was showing. She said when she went backstage, her manager said her career was over.

“Those were the days when you shouldn’t show your butt to have a career. Now it’s the opposite,” she joked.

The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on NBC. Check out the interview above.
