Austin Meadows to remain out while dealing with mental health

Austin Meadows will remain out of the Tigers’ lineup for the rest of the season while dealing with his mental health.

The outfielder, who has not played since June 15, revealed Friday afternoon that in addition to vertigo, COVID and tendinitis keeping him sidelined, he is dealing with something internal.

“What I have told very few people is that I also have been struggling with my mental health in a way that has extended my time away from the game that I love so much,” Meadows wrote in a post on Twitter. “I’ve been dealing with this privately with a great team of professionals, but I need to continue to put in the hard work off the field towards feeling mentally healthy.”

The 27-year-old owns a .250/.347/.328 slash line with a .675 OPS in 36 games this season. He arrived in Detroit just days before Opening Day after the team acquired him from the Rays.

Meadows played four-plus seasons in Tampa Bay, which included an All-Star nod in 2019, and played a pivotal role in the team’s runs deep into the postseason.

“While I’ve been back in the clubhouse the past few weeks, and plan to remain with the club through the end of season, I am still not ready to return to the field,” Meadows’ post continued. “I am so grateful for my family, my teammates, and the Tigers organization for supporting me through this.”

Meadows carries a one-year, $4 million contract before entering the first of two arbitration-eligible offseasons after the year.

“I can’t do this alone, and I hope in sharing my experience I can touch at least one person who might be going through their own struggles and encourage them to reach out to someone.”
