Odell Beckham back at Giants facility to visit Sterling Shepard

The Giants need a dynamic wide receiver in the worst way.

Odell Beckham Jr. is available and he was once a dynamic wide receiver for the Giants in the best way.

And so, connect the dots with the news that Beckham on Monday was at the Giants facility.

Wow, right?

Well, not so much.

Beckham was indeed inside the building at 1925 Giants Drive but it was not an official visit with the team. He was there to catch up with his good friend Sterling Shepard, his former Giants teammate, who is going through a rough time, having torn his ACL in Week 3 to prematurely end his comeback season. Shepard ruptured his Achilles in the season finale in 2021 and made a strong recovery, only to suffer another serious injury.

While he was in the facility, Beckham did not meet with general manager Joe Schoen or head coach Brian Daboll. The Giants regularly hold workouts and tryouts for free agents — Beckham is indeed a free agent — but this was nothing of the sort.

Beckham, 29, is recovering from the torn ACL that knocked him out of Super Bowl LVI, after he was on his way to possibly earning MVP honors as the Rams defeated the Bengals. He is expected to re-sign with the Rams once he is ready to return to the field.

It is not as if the Giants are not desperate for someone with the ability to catch the football. They are coming off a game in which their wide receivers caught three passes for 25 yards. Their leading receiver is former 49ers reserve Richie James. He has 15 catches for 155 yards. The Giants are 3-1 despite having the NFL’s 31st-ranked passing attack.

Beckham was the Giants’ first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and in five seasons he caught 390 passes for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns. He was beset with injuries, his relationship with the team soured and he was traded to the Browns prior to the 2019 season. The Browns soured on him after three seasons and he landed in Los Angeles, where he won a Super Bowl.
