Americans will have ‘better choices’ than Trump in 2024

Former Vice President Mike Pence believes Americans will have “better choices” than Donald Trump in future elections and said that he’s giving “prayerful consideration” to launching his own 2024 White House bid.

When asked by ABC’s David Muir on Monday if Trump, 76, should ever be president again, the former vice president responded that he thinks “that’s up to the American people.”

“But I think we’ll have better choices in the future,” Pence continued.

“People in this country actually get along pretty well once you get out of politics. And I think they want to see their national leaders start to reflect that same, that same compassion and generosity of spirit. And I think, so in the days ahead, I think there will be better choices.”

“And for me and my family, we will be reflecting what our roles will be in that,” he added.

The Indiana native told Muir that he and his family are weighing a presidential run in 2024, and that the decision will not be affected by Trump’s upcoming announcement of a possible White House run of his own.

“We’re giving it consideration in our house. Prayerful consideration,” Pence said.

The former vice president wouldn’t speculate about his chances against his former boss in the primary races.

“Well, that would be for others to say,” Pence said, when asked if he could beat Trump. “And it’d be for us to decide whether or not we’d want to test that.”

Karen Pence, the former VP’s wife, added during Monday’s television special that she and her husband expect to discuss the matter with their three children over the holidays. She said the decision will come down to whether or not “they feel called.”

When asked about Trump’s Mar-a-Lago announcement scheduled for Tuesday night, Mike Pence said that he expects that he’ll see it.

During the interview, the former vice president also expressed his anger at Trump over the former president’s actions leading up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Pence told Muir that Trump’s actions “endangered me and my family and everyone at the Capitol building” during the riot.

“The president’s words were reckless and his actions were reckless,” Pence said, bluntly calling the former president “part of the problem” on Jan. 6.

Pence said that he went five days without speaking to Trump after Jan. 6, and that he never heard from the president or the White House at all that day.

The former vice president said he and his ex-boss talked after his presidency, but not since the summer of 2021, when Pence says that Trump returned to his pre-Jan. 6 rhetoric about the 2020 election.

Pence added that leading up to the Capitol riot, Trump was being advised by a group of attorneys that shouldn’t have been let on the White House grounds, calling some of Trump’s aides “profoundly bad advisers.”
