Drew Barrymore, Gayle King Hope Chris Rock Talks Slapgate During Live Netflix Special: “Sure He Has Plenty to Say”

Drew Barrymore and Gayle King couldn’t hold back their excitement for Chris Rock ahead of the comedian’s headlining set at the first-ever live Netflix comedy special. During today’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Showthe duo dished on what they thought the comedian would joke about at the event, which is set to take place early next year. And of course, both think he’ll mention that infamous Oscars slap.

While King called the upcoming Netflix event “big news,” Barrymore thought Rock was just the guy to lead it, calling him “a very smart” choice, “considering everything he’s been through and hasn’t talked about and has talked about.”

In case you live under a Rock (wink, wink), the talk show host was referring to the 2022 Academy Awards, during which the actor was smacked across the face by Will Smith, who rushed the stage after hearing his joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith.

“What will he say, what won’t he say?” Barrymore wondered aloud on today’s show, noting the anticipation ” will give that sort of live factor the necessary push that it needs. It’s not an, ‘I can catch this later,’ it’s, ‘I want to be in the moment.’”

King, who said “everybody’s been trying to get an interview with Chris since it happened,” added, “I’m sure he has plenty to say.” She, like everyone else, admitted, “And I want to hear what he has to say.”

The women went on to talk about how Rock “didn’t engage” with anyone following the incident, leading Barrymore to say, “He also has the power to, like, heal this moment, be a conductor of how we all move forward. This could be a very unifying thing.”

When King asked if it’s his responsibility to do the healing, the 50 First Dates actress said, “I don’t think it’s his responsibility because he didn’t do it, it happened to him.” You tell ’em, Drew!

Regardless of what happens, King — who confessed she’s “nuts” about Rock — told the audience that she will be watching that Netflix special and that she is “very excited for it” and “very excited for him.”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays at 9:30 a.m. ET.
