Mayor Eric Adams fired his latest salvo in the war on rats Friday, as he signed legislation that will force landlords to buy heavy-duty garbage bins if they fail to prevent the rodents from infesting their trash bags.
“I’ve made it clear I hate rats – and we’re gonna kill some rats,” Hizzoner said at the bill signing in Manhattan. “We’re putting a dent in our rodent problem.”
The package of legislation inked into law will give the Sanitation Department the authority to require that buildings keep their trash in vermin-proof bins if they rack up two or more rodent complaints.
It also codifies recently announced policy changes made by City Hall that require businesses and apartment buildings to set out their trash no earlier than 8 pm, reducing the amount of time bags spend sitting on the street — and the window for rats to get in.
The legislation comes after officials rolled out a new pilot program that installed street-side storage bins in Times Square and Brooklyn Heights for businesses to stash their trash as another experiment in cutting off the food supply for rodents.
