Zabar’s scion sells chic NYC condo for $3.15M

Rachel Zabar — of New York’s famed lox, bagel and babka family — has sold her downtown Manhattan loft for $3.15 million, according to property records.
Although Zabar once told the New York Times that she worked in the bread, coffee and caviar departments as a teenager at the iconic gourmet grocer, she made her name as a high-end vintage couture dealer.
Zabar tells Gimme Shelter she hasn’t lived in the home, located at 19 Bond St. in Noho, since 2006 — when she moved to LA.
“I renovated it, and then rented it out. It was time to sell,” Zabar said.





The sale of her condo was first reported by the Real Deal, which added the buyer is FlatRate Moving founder Sharone Ben-Harosh. StreetEasy shows the spread first hit the market in June for $3.39 million and lowered its price three months later to $3.19 million. She bought the unit for $920,000 in 2001, according to records.
Still, Zabar added, she’s often back in the Big Apple to see friends and family, including her 94-year-old father Saul — whose parents Louis and Lillian founded the uptown appetizing destination. In fact, Zabar links her love of vintage to her days on the Upper West Side, when she and her father used to haunt the flea market.
“I was always interested in vintage, from the time I was around 9 years old,” Zabar said. “My dad and I would always go to the flea market at Amsterdam and 77th Street. It was the era of the John Hughes movies, with the overcoats, and that kind of vintage look. I was always looking for vintage pieces and it just never ended — and I eventually turned it into a business.”





From her eponymous store, Rachel Zabar Vintage in LA — and her perch as a 1st dibs online vintage dealer — Zabar sells couture to red carpet clients like Tracee Ellis Ross, Charlize Theron and Rihanna. Zabar also sells to private collectors, institutions like Tokyo’s Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum, and fashion house archivists at brands including Saint Laurent and Gucci.
Zabar added that if she does buy a new pied-à-terre in the city, it will be in the same downtown neighborhood, which is her still her favorite.
The one-bedroom, one-bathroom home is 1,367 square feet. It comes with an open kitchen with a breakfast bar, robin’s egg blue cabinetry and recessed lighting. An area adjacent to the kitchen can serve as a dining nook or home office. The bedroom comes with a custom closet, a spa-like bathroom and two floor-to-ceiling 18th century Provencal wood doors that open to shelving units.
Design details also include 12-foot ceilings, double-hung windows, exposed brick and original columns. There’s also a wall of built-in closets and a rolling ladder with bookshelves to the ceiling just above it — as well as a woodburning fireplace and sliding glass doors that open to a Juliet balcony overlooking Lafayette and Bond streets.
Ian Slater of Compass — who declined to comment — had the listing, while Tamir Shemesh, of Serhant, repped the buyer.
