Eagles’ James Bradberry won’t get flustered facing Giants

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni on Wednesday said he spoke with cornerback James Bradberry about his emotions for Sunday’s game against his former team. Bradberry spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Giants but was released in May to save more than $10 million on the salary cap.

Sirianni a week earlier said he cautioned receiver A.J. Brown about not getting distracted getting ready to face his former team, the Titans. And Sirianni admitted he gave himself the same reminder a few weeks earlier when the Eagles were getting ready to face the Colts, the team Sirianni left to go to Philadelphia.

“I looked at [Bradberry] and said, ‘I think you’re the last person I need to say that to,’ ’’ Sirianni said. “He’s so calm and even-keeled. He doesn’t get too up, he doesn’t get too down. He’s the last person I needed to say, ‘Hey, you’re playing this team, don’t let it affect your preparation for the week.’ I know what a great pro he is.’’

New Giants general manager Joe Schoen did not want to part ways with Bradberry, but the cornerback was in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract, and the Giants did not have the salary cap space to keep him. On the open market, Bradberry signed a one-year deal with the Eagles for $7.25 million, and now he and Darius Slay, the other starting cornerback, get to go against an unimpressive Giants receiver group.

“That’s the NFL, people are one place and then they’re in the next place,’’ coach Brian Daboll said of Bradberry. “Both those guys, Bradberry and Slay, are really good corners. They can play zone, they can play man, they’re experienced, they read routes well. Two hard guys outside to throw the ball against.’’

Bradberry, 29, grades out as the 13th-best cornerback in the league this season, according to Pro Football Focus. Slay is No. 16. The top-rated Giants cornerback, Adoree’ Jackson, is No. 22, but Jackson is out with a sprained knee.

Defensive lineman Leonard Williams (neck) did not practice. He was forced out of last Sunday’s loss to the Commanders. “See where he is tomorrow,’’ Daboll said.

Also out of practice: Jackson (knee), OL Josh Ezeudu (neck) and OL Shane Lemieux (toe). G Ben Bredeson, on injured reserve with a knee injury, will practice this week, and Daboll sounded more optimistic about his chances to return than he was last week. CB Darnay Holmes, who missed the 20-20 tie with the Commanders with a shoulder injury, returned to practice on a limited basis. WR Richie James (knee), CB Nick McCloud (hamstring) and DL Henry Mondeaux (knee) were also limited.

Daboll said on Wednesday “it’s possible’’ S Xavier McKinney would get the pins removed from the fractured fingers on his left hand. “I doubt it’’ Daboll said, when asked if McKinney might be available to start practicing this week. McKinney was injured during the bye week in an all-terrain vehicle incident in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

As promised, Daboll gave S Julian Love, DT Dexter Lawence and G Mark Glowinski “vet days’’ off from practice.

RB Saquon Barkley is the leading vote-getter among fans at running back for the Pro Bowl with 122,295 votes. … Nigerian offensive lineman Roy Mbaeteka was re-signed to the practice squad. The 6-foot-9, 320-pound Mbaeteka was released on Sept. 29, coming to the Giants from the International Player Pathway program. The Giants see him as a developmental player for 2023, but roster demands and practice squad limitations made it difficult to keep him around the past few months.
