NFL insider floats idea of Sean Payton, Tom Brady Saints package

One NFL insider believes the idea of Sean Payton and Tom Brady together in New Orleans is possible.

In his Tuesday article, ProFootballTalk founder Mike Florio cited a source as saying its the “worst-kept secret” in the NFL that Payton is returning to the Saints, adding that the Broncos and Panthers were unlikely destinations for the coach.

The Chargers job doesn’t look like it’s coming open and it would take a playoff humiliation for Mike McCarthy to get booted out of the Cowboys job that Payton has been linked to for years. The Rams job is an intriguing possibility, but it would require Sean McVay to step aside.

Payton and Brady sought to team up on the Dolphins, and the NFL wound up punishing the franchise for tampering while Brady was still under contract with the Buccaneers.

The Saints are 6-9 in Dennis Allen’s first season as head coach.

As for Brady, while the Bucs currently lead the NFC South, they have faltered with a 7-8 record and Brady has appeared frustrated in numerous instances.

“Brady is a free agent after the season,” Florio said. “He can go anywhere. Why not the Saints? Why not team up with Payton? Why not play his home games in the stadium where he won his first Super Bowl?”

Payton retired from the Saints after last season and has spent this year as a studio analyst for Fox Sports. He previously won a Super Bowl.

Whether the NFL would let Brady and Payton pair team up after exposing their past surreptitious plan remains to be seen, but it’s an interesting hypothetical.
