NYC for-hire drivers protest Uber after judge delays TLC pay raise

Hundreds of New York City for-hire drivers skipped work Monday to protest Uber after its lawsuit successfully delayed a planned Taxi and Limousine Commission rate and wage hike.
“Our message is to stand down and drop the lawsuit,” driver Raul Rivera, 53, of the Bronx said at a morning rally at Foley Square in Manhattan organized by the Independent Drivers Guild.
The hacks caravanned from Brooklyn to Manhattan, calling on their fellow New Yorkers and drivers to refrain from using Uber’s services.
Drivers held signs with messages like “Uber = Grinch” and “Drivers are worth more than the way Uber treats us.”
“Turn off the Uber app today!” NYC Rideshare Club President Naomi Ogutu railed to a crowd of about 100.
“I’m a mother of three,” said Ogutu, 45. “Why are you taking food out of their mouths?”
A Manhattan judge last week granted Uber’s bid to temporarily block the pay hike for ride-share drivers from going into effect on Monday.
The new policy would have raised driver pay from 2019 rates, by 7.42% per minute and 23.93% per mile.
Another driver group, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, planned to rally outside Uber HQ at 3 World Trade Center at 1 p.m.
NYTWA called on its membership to go on a strike for 24-hours beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday.
“This raise we’ve been fighting for, and the court siding with Uber is very awful,” NYTWA member Alpha Berry told The Post last week.
“It just seems like nobody is listening to us. We are struggling out there. Making a living on the road is not easy. There’s no driver who won’t tell you they don’t have back pain, or don’t have diabetes, or don’t have high blood pressure.”
