The East Coast is getting some relief from winter weather as warmer-than-average temperatures encompass the region on Wednesday, but don’t get used to it. Things are cooling off again just in time for the weekend.
Numerous record-high temperatures were set Tuesday from the Midwest to the mid-Atlantic. Those warm temperatures will now build across the eastern third of the country through midweek ahead of an approaching cold front.
“New York, we are waking up to 57 degrees. That is more than what we typically would have for an afternoon high in January,” FOX Weather meteorologist Britta Merwin said. “Our afternoon temperatures in general for January in New York sit in the 40s. So the fact that we’re starting off the day in the mid- to upper 50s is pretty spectacular.”
Record highs are possible Wednesday from Jacksonville, Florida, to northeastern Pennsylvania. The mid-Atlantic and Northeast will see highs between 25 and 30 degrees above average.
“We do have some highs that might be challenged today in the record books,” Merwin said. “We could go up to 57 degrees in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, this is a hard one for the ski resorts.”
“If we’re sitting in January in the 60s, I’ll take it because the winter out on the East Coast, it takes a little while to work your way all the way through April until you finally have that big warmup,” Merwin said. “So if we can get a couple of days into January where it’s mild, I say go for it.”
On Thursday, the warmth becomes less dramatic across the East Coast, with temperatures closer to average by Friday and into the weekend.
